We are currently experiencing a lot of interest in our MEd program, likely the result of a significant injection of funds into the K-12 system by the Ministry of Education in BC. With that in mind, we encourage you to submit your application early. We’d prefer you to be accommodated through good planning, and not be disappointed due to lack of knowledge about this increased demand. That said, this is our current approach during this time:

“CityU accepts applications on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a cohort has reached the maximum number of students, waitlisted applications are considered future cohorts. Although we advise applicants to email their applications by June 30th, they might be waitlisted for later cohorts if Fall cohorts have reached capacity. Contact our student Advisor on 778-588-5002 for cohort locations and availability.”

CityU in Canada offers two Master of Education (M.Ed.) programs:

  • M.Ed.?in Leadership
  • M.Ed. in School Counselling

All programs are taught by leading Canadian practitioners in local districts throughout the province. The programs are tailored for teachers who want to pursue a M.Ed. degree while continuing to work full-time.

The M.Ed. programs:

  • meet the Teacher Qualification Service requirements for public sector teacher pay scale increases in British Columbia and Alberta
  • help to prepare teachers for educational leadership and/or school counselling positions in the British Columbia and Alberta public or private school system
  • provide an excellent opportunity to learn as a cohort in a professional learning community
  • the leadership and the school counselling programs are both structured around
    • (a) foundation courses that focus on professional growth and developing research skills
    • (b) core courses on interpersonal skills and understandings of school leadership and functioning
    • (c) program-specific courses
  • Include mentored internships that provide opportunities to put theory into practice

Typically students complete the 52 credits in two years. Please note that the MEd in Leadership and School Counselling is designed for school-based practice and does not prepare graduates for clinical mental health practice. If you are interested in pursuing a career as a clinical counsellor the Master in Counselling program is the path to take.
