We are thrilled to announce a new Graduate Certificate Program in Industrial Arts and Applied Design Instruction. This program will begin in October 2018 and be based in Vancouver’s Fraser Valley region.

The new BC Curriculum Plan recognized the need for a strong Industrial Arts and Applied Design program in BC schools. This has caused an increase in demand for existing programs which have traditionally taught trades people to teach in schools. CityU Canada will be taking an alternative and progressive approach with this new program aimed at giving existing teachers skills to teach trades offered through Industrial Arts in our schools. But beyond skill sets within a teaching environment, the CityU program will apply “design thinking” across multiple courses, allowing integration of disciplines, so fundamental to problem solving and innovation which is critical for students these days.

The program is intended to provide current British Columbia teachers with the knowledge and skills required to teach Industrial Arts, with an Applied Design focus, in BC schools. It will be based in fundamental design principles of applied design outlined in the new BC Curriculum Plan. Applicants will learn curricular and pedagogical skills applicable to the teaching of Industrial Arts in BC schools, including woodworking and applied design. Participants will learn skills and strategies both in the classroom and an actual Industrial Arts Shop, where effective teaching skills and strategies are learned experientially. The use of a workshop environment will allow teachers to experience design and innovation thinking as they learn how to integrate cross curriculum competencies. Safety is an additional primary focus throughout the program; instruction and practices adhere to BC WorkSafe principles and practices. Applicants who complete this program will have the knowledge, skills and certification necessary to teach Industrial Arts in BC K-12 schools.

The Graduate Certificate in Industrial Arts and Applied Design Instruction will use some existing MEd Leadership in Education courses, allowing graduates of the certificate program to earn 17 credits and then continue on to the MEd Leadership in Education degree, should they wish to do so. Certificate courses are eligible to be used towards a TQS upgrade. In addition to laddering into the MEd program, the non-linear approach to problem solving is expected to invigorate your teaching approach across disciplines. We will also be integrating Aboriginal and Indigenous studies into the woodworking component of studies, further reinforcing the principles within the new BC Curriculum.

This program will be based in the Fraser Valley, Langley Vancouver valley region. The ideal candidates are early/mid career teachers looking to add to their learning, appreciative of progressive approaches to cross curricular learning, and wanting to position as an educator with a passion for problem solving and innovation. Plus you might not mind getting your hands a little dirty. In fact, you likely would find that fun!

Detailed course descriptions:

ECC 509 Preparation for Industrial Growth (3 credits) In this professional development course, candidates conduct a reflective self-assessment of themselves and their knowledge and skills, developing a Professional Growth Plan that will act as a foundation and guide throughout the rest of the MEd program.

ECC 510 Technology Tools and Information Literacy (2 credits) The course purpose is to introduce students to information literacy and the processes basic to educational research. Students use online technology to access scholarly journals and a variety of professional online sources for developing their research papers; they also critique journal articles and prepare an annotated bibliography to explore the topic of their final research. Students develop understanding of information technology and its use in research and in practical decision making as an educational leader.

EEA 534 Technologies for Learning (3 credits) This course introduces candidates to technology literacy and applications in order to find, evaluate, and apply information to inform and improve student learning and teacher pedagogy. Candidates use digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information in order to plan and conduct quality research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions. Applications include the electronic portfolio, instructional and curricular decisions, research and assessment, assistance to teachers, and the impact of technology on school and societal change.

TCI 550 Skills and Pedagogy in Industrial Arts and Applied Design (3 credits) This course introduces candidates to project-based learning, working technologies, design literacy and skills, with a focus on project design and approaches to implementation. Acquisition and application of these skills allow candidates to apply cross-curricular theories to solve practical and Inquiry- based problems. Candidates learn how to apply these processes to their current pedagogy and practice. Design, curricular, and pedagogical skills learned in this course also allow candidates to improve their teaching practice in other content areas.

EEA 532 Instructional Leadership: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (3 credits) This course introduces students to the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of school leaders in managing instructional processes. Students learn about a leader’s view of curriculum, instruction and assessment, and pedagogy that guides teachers along the career continuum. Students build leadership capacity to make a positive impact on teaching, learning, and assessment, and they review provincial education plans developed for 21st Century Learners.

ECC 515 Leadership and Counselling Diverse Cultures in Education (3 credits) The course explores the implications of cultural and diversity issues in the school environment. Candidates learn to build their cultural proficiency as well as deepen their self-awareness regarding their own culture and world view. Candidates develop strategies that can be used in the school to promote the emotional and physical well-being of all students and the climate of the school as a place for learning.

ECC 511 Research Methods in Education (3 credits) In this course candidates will study a variety of research methodologies including formal research, action research, data driven instruction, and assessment. All of these forms of research are tools of the reflective practitioner. Find, evaluate, and use relevant research materials to develop skills in critiquing published research and reviewing literature and methodologies to develop a research plan.

TCI 650 Applied Project in Industrial Arts and Applied Design (6 credits) Based on principles of Project-Based Learning, this course advances candidates’ understanding of tools and technologies used in Industrial Arts and Applied Design through a self-directed study and project. Candidates create a large-scaled project based on research of Industrial Arts principles and practices learned throughout the program. Candidates integrate theory and practice into the successful completion of this project. Candidates produce (a) a project incorporating the major elements of applied design, research of historical genres and use of technologies; (b) a set of full-scale plans including accurate measurements of all components; (c) safety procedure summaries; and (d) a presentation explaining the reason for the chosen project and the journey of its creation.
