Position Description:

The Family Counsellor provides a variety of parenting education and supportive Interventions that promote healthier family functioning and utilization of community resources to Indigenous families. Indigenous identifying peoples are strongly encouraged to apply and may be given preference.


??Provide assessment of family and/or child functioning and needs
??Provide time limited interventions with a standard length of service appropriate to each program model
??Provide counselling, support and intervention services in the family home or in the community, as appropriate
??Liaise with others providing service to the family
??Work in a collaborative form with MCFD to serve in the best interest of the Child
??Redevelop goals with the client on a regular basis, as problems are resolved
??Provide culturally competent service to clients
??Maintains timely records of assessments, contacts, logs referrals and MCFD reports
??Remain up-to-date with all services provided by WFCS and its community partners
??Works collaboratively as a team with supervisor and peers in delivery of specific service goals according to the agency mission and values
??Share culture knowledge and values with the Family Preservation team and other professionals to bring a better understanding of Indigenous cultures
??Conflict Management
??Other duties as required

Desirable Skills/Experience:

??Demonstrated experience in the Family Preservation Program
??Work experience with Indigenous families and communities

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

??Knowledge of child welfare policies and practices relevant to Indigenous communities
??In-depth knowledge of child development and child abuse dynamics
??An understanding of child and adolescent stages of development
??Ability to work with families that may present multiple service needs related to poverty, addictions, violence, child abuse or neglect, and mental health issues
??Ability to provide counselling in a variety of approaches that best fits client needs
??Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

Education?& Qualifications:

??Relevant degree with 5 years’ experience and at least 2 years’ work experience with Indigenous families
??Broad based understanding and knowledge of familial and social issues affecting Indigenous families, including but not limited to intergenerational trauma, colonialism and residential schools, traditional wellness and healing practices and culture as therapy
??Knowledge of computer operating systems (i.e. Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Publisher)
??Clear Criminal Record Check and Driver’s Abstract
??Current First Aid

Working Conditions:

??Vehicle and Class 5 Driver’s License required for this position
??Work evenings and weekends when required
??Union membership is required for this position and is open to male and female applicants
